5K, Baby!

I've always hated running. I'll do Boot Camp, kickboxing, weights, etc., but I've always dreaded the mere mention of a run. Back in high school I had friends try to tempt me to join track, but I couldn't do it. I couldn't suffer the humiliation. Besides, who wants to run? I couldn't fathom their desire.

Anyway, my dear friend, Holli, suggested we run the 5K for the Provo Freedom Festival. I balked. Seriously? We decided to train using the couch-to-5K program (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml). We figured we could cheer ourselves on through motivational text messages. I had a concrete goal, so at that point I couldn't back down. I decided I'd try this horrific cardio -- I needed to lose the baby weight anyway.

So I was off and training hard. Initially I thought I was crazy, but the more I went, the more I found myself needing it. I was hooked! After nine weeks race day drew near, and I knew I could at least run the thing without walking or stopping (my only goal, seeing as how novice I was).

The Freedom Run provided us with computer trackers to more accurately time us. Nifty, eh? Can I tell you how hard it was to find the perfect running shoe? (it's a science!). After researching I found I underpronated due to my high arch, so I needed a shoe with extra cushioning. I found this New Balance one which was fantastic! I'll never spend pittance for a running shoe again!

Unfortunately, Holli couldn't do the race (due to circumstances beyond her control). My brother, David, convinced my other brothers and his wife to run, so i ended up with a posse. I had plenty of support. This shot was taken at 6:15 am (5:15 PDT). Too early for this night owl!

Scott's sporting the sweat band. How Jane Fonda is that? Steven (far left) looks murderous, while Bryan, David, and I appear cordial.

Here's a post-race shot back at my parents (I have more photos coming from the race site, but I need to download my iPhone pics first). We did it! My brothers rolled their eyes at our participation medals, but I cherish mine. I participated in my first race, and I didn't die. In fact, I may do another one in September. I think Holli created a monster!

BTW, what is the runner's high? I still haven't felt it. I seem to struggle with each step. And, for those of you wondering about weight loss, running did a fantastic job on my glutes (sorry about the description, but my rear end has disappeared!). If only my stomach would do the same . . . . :(

Way to go, Lisa! You would leave me behind in the dust! :) It's great to see a picture of you with your brothers and sister-in-law. Hopefully we'll be there to cheer you on as you run by next 4th of July!

I too hate running but it does help lose that baby weight. I need to get back to the gym- I haven't been running since summer started and my backside knows it.

Way to go Lisa! I ran in that same race last year and LOVED it. I even did it without a Pose.

Just keep running, it gets easier!

Awesome!! For me, the runners high hits at a few different times. When a great song comes on the ipod and the adrenaline rushes through my body and then the euphoria that comes when I actually finish the run. All the rest of the run I despise running. Hate it. But, like you, I'm addicted. I become one cranky Mama if I don't get a daily run in. Where's the run in Sept? You can come join me in a half at Camp Pendleton... :)
