Yearbook Musings

Senior pic. Big, glowing hair. A floral dress with puffed sleeves. Classic!

Sadly, a classmate of mine passed away, so I pulled out my senior yearbook (I needed a picture to jog my memory). As I flipped through the pages, I flashed back to those yearbook signing days -- they were always so stressful! I knew my words would live forever, so I wanted to be deep, clever, funny, and insightful. I also felt like I had to assess the friendship. Does he/she like me as much as I like him/her? How chummy do I write this entry? However, as books were passed to me, my mind went blank and I wrote the standard drivel. Lame!

When I saw what my classmates wrote to me, I had to wonder:

Can anyone explain these inside jokes? I have no idea!
"Lisa, AKA Spiderwoman"
"So glad you're not made out of plastic!" (I get the gist, but I forgot the context -- I had multiple entries about that one)
"Too bad about 'your dress'! Even worse about 'my dress' and that one girl."
"I'm just so sick of you following me that I tried to stay away -- hold the phone -- just kidding"
"I loved all your stories about your rich uncles"
"You listened to me babble about PJ's."
"Your genre was great!"

Why did guys profess their admiration for me the last day of our senior year? Seriously, if I had known, I wouldn't have stressed so much about who to ask on those silly girls'-choice dances. I always felt inadequate!

Was I, along with my friends, completely shallow in regards to college plans? Did I scream desperation?
"We need to find you a man, to get you some REAL romance"
"As soon as you get into college you'll find someone that makes the high school guys look like gerbils."
"Find a hottie at BYU and introduce me to his brother."
"Get good grades and find that perfect RM to marry."
"Let's get together and scope out some hot guys this summer."
"Anytime you want to come down to my 'love bungalow' I'll set you up with somebody!"

I was never the prowling type. But if my yearbook is any indication, maybe my recollection is wrong. :(

Am I sensing some bitterness?
"Even with all your long-awaited popularity, you've still managed to say hi to me in the halls." OUCH! For the record, I was NOT popular.

Here are the most commonly used words in descending order: Good friend, Nice, Cute, Smart, I Love You, Cool, Sweet. How benign.

Other tidbits? No profanity (although someone literally wrote "cuss word" in a margin), no innuendo (luscious, blue eyes was the most racy thing), and I received multiple glowing entries from a very guilt-ridden friend. Jodie G wrote little phrases throughout (such as Zoobies R Us and Boys in the Trunk), and I wrote a quick love note signed by anonymous -- who was I trying to fool? Future generations? The handwriting gave it away.

So long, yearbook! Back to the shelf you go to collect dust. Until we meet again . . . .

Its amazing how we overthink all those things. Truthfully, someone out there is reading what we wrote and over thinking it too. I always hope that people realize it was just high school. I think your comments show that people respected you well enough not to have profanity or inuendos. You should be flattered. Stop overthinking it and know that you have a lot of great friends. I love your picture. :) haha... the hair and the dress... just lovely. :) Glad we are friends.

Hilarious! I'm sitting here worried about what I wrote in your yearbook. I probably wrote something about scoping out the guys. Ah, the memories.

This post was SO funny!! I think back to high school and just cringe. I was so silly and, I don't know, juvenile? :) It is weird to think that in 20 years, I'll be looking back at myself now, probably thinking the same types of things. :)

That was classic! Thank you for sharing. My daughter recently discovered my Jr. High year book. That was a treasure!

Lisa you crack me up! I never had any of those thoughts. It is so fun to see what other people thought. I didn't stick around for yearbook signing... Waverunning at Yuba... but had I stayed...Lisa, You are the funnest, smartest, and most clever girl I have EVER known. I am so lucky to have you as a friend! I of course would have written that in glitter pen and dotted my i's with hearts!

Happy Dusty Year Book Day...

And by the way, my brother just had a stamp made his freshman year. It said, "You are my very best friend. Sincerely, CJ Hamilton."

Lisa, I enjoyed reading about all your yearbook memories! Doesn't it seem like another lifetime ago? But I hadn't heard anything about someone dying recently...?

I'm with Kayelynn...a little worried about who passed away.

Wow! So impressed that you're brave enough to take that trip down memory lane. I think I'm still trying to convince myself I'm not that person.

For the record, I love your red hair. You're still 2 cute 2 B 4gotten ;)

I'm still laughing about the "cuss word". I think the funniest thing about high school was how grown up we thought we were. Yet, in reality...

It's so sad when those our age are leaving this world too early. I'm not sure who exactly you're referring to, but there was one recently that made me feel really grateful to the wonderful friends I had growing up that were a good influence. Thanks for not encouraging me to do things I shouldn't! :) You totally rock!
